For the past 5 years, Louise Assem has led the International Copper Association’s (ICA’s) Material Stewardship (MS) program, creating and executing strategies to support copper’s contribution to sustainable development. Louise’s team, which sits across three continents, gathers, analyzes and communicates data on the sustainability and impacts or copper and the industry. Louise Chairs the International Council on Mining and Metals Lifecycle Management Working Group, represents ICA and its members on the ICMM Material Stewardship Facility Steering Committee and Chairs the multi-stakeholder Roundtable on the Responsible Recycling of Metals Non-ferrous WG. More than anything, Louise is grateful to have the opportunity to work with the talented individuals on her team and in peer organizations on a diversity of topics with engaged stakeholders. A scientist at heart with a love for metals, Louise is passionate about the natural environment and loves getting out there to enjoy it in all its forms. Louise has a PhD and Master’s in Toxicology/Aquatic Ecotoxicology, and a BSc(Hons) in Chemistry and has worked professionally in metals health, environment and sustainability for more than 17 years.
